Research Cybersecurity Effective Practices and NSPM-33

Thursday, April 30, 2026 | 1:30PM–2:00PM PT | Pacific Ballroom A, Second Floor
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel
The 2024 research security program (RSP) implementation guidance issued in relation to National Security Presidential Memorandum 33 (NSPM-33) was vague, leaving research institutions and their funding agencies uncertain about what research cybersecurity in this context might look like. EDUCAUSE worked with the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) over the course of several months to develop proposed research cybersecurity effective practices to inform that perspective. In the meantime, though, consideration of potential RSP requirements and how research cybersecurity would best fit into them remains ongoing. This session will explore how the proposed research cybersecurity effective practices arose, where they stand now, and what is known about how they might fit into the broader RSP requirements likely to emerge as a result of NSPM-33.
