As cyberthreats and privacy regulations grow against higher education, the need for unprecedented levels of sophistication has fundamentally shifted from the network to the Identity. For the modern institution, whether small or large, a maturing cybersecurity and privacy program is no longer optional—a robust Identity and Access Management (IAM) solution serves as a critical bridge between the two. Yet many institutions remain tethered to fragile manual scripts and "identity debt" that leave them vulnerable, undermining both security posture and privacy compliance. IAM ensures that the right people get the right access to the right resources at the right time for the right reasons, enabling the right outcomes. This foundational approach transforms not only security but also privacy protection, user onboarding experiences, and operational efficiency. Join us for a deep-dive into why IAM is the nonnegotiable first step in the Higher Ed Cybersecurity Maturity Model. Drawing on real-world implementations at Hamilton College and Denison University, we will demonstrate how small- to medium-sized institutions can replace technical debt with an identity fabric that scales within budget constraints. We will explore how data-driven IAM-leveraging detail driven data can automate the management of complex multi-affiliations (student-staff-alumni) while ensuring policies, practices, and privacy controls can work in harmony. This session will provide a roadmap for moving from "reactive" IT to a "proactive" security posture that aligns with Zero Trust principles and evolving mandates.
