Join us for Empowering the Modern CISO: Strategies for Success, part of the EDUCAUSE Leadership Series.
This event, led by facilitators Joanna Grama and Valerie Vogel, will take place over two weeks, with various opportunities to engage in synchronous, asynchronous, and collaborative learning with members of the higher education information security community. During the event, participants will explore the following topics and more with multiple panelists who are current or former higher education CISOs:
- Deciding whether you want to be a CISO in higher education
- Explore the challenges and rewards of being a higher education CISO.
- Understand essential roles, skills, and pathways for professional development and advancement.
- Strategies for advising campus leadership
- Gain insights into establishing credibility and advising institutional leadership.
- Learn leadership skills for managing pressure, change, and legal liabilities.
- Understanding the benefits of succession planning
- Delve into the advantages of succession planning and cross-training.
- Develop inclusive strategies for identifying and nurturing future leaders.
- Creating a sustainable higher education information security program
- Learn to build and mature information security programs amidst change and threats.
- Understand strategies for battling change fatigue and reacting to evolving threats.
Throughout the event, participants will network, share with, and learn from a cohort of higher education professionals and leaders. Via structured discussions and activities, participants will:
- Reflect, synthesize, and network, while discussing key issues with other professionals in the field; and
- Develop relationships with others for ongoing conversation and ideation as they progress along their professional pathway.

Joanna Grama
Senior Principal, Vantage Technology Consulting Group
Joanna Lyn Grama, JD, CISSP, CIPT, CRISC, is a Vice President and Partner with Vantage Technology Consulting Group. Joanna has more than 20 years of experience with a strong focus in law, higher education, information security, and data privacy. Joanna's passion for designing effective, standards-based, and end-user focused organizational information security policy frameworks helps organizations successfully evolve their information security program risk and compliance functions. Joanna is skilled at helping all technology users understand complicated information security and privacy concepts.
Valerie Vogel
Senior Strategic Consultant, Vantage Technology Consulting Group
Valerie has more than 20 years of experience in higher education information security and privacy program development and management, with a focus on maturing information security awareness, education, and outreach programs, improving incident response programs, as well as planning professional development, mentoring, and community building initiatives. Prior to joining Vantage, Valerie was the Senior Manager of the Cybersecurity Program at EDUCAUSE. In that role, she spearheaded the association’s annual Security Professionals Conference, organized the Annual Campus Security Awareness Campaign, and served as the managing editor of the EDUCAUSE Review Security Matters blog column.
