Establishing Metrics for mLearning

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 | 9:00AM–10:00AM | Salon F
Session Type: ELI
mLearning is increasingly prevalent in all educational settings, and yet its definition, role, and assessment are still largely amorphous and subjective. Many mobile initiatives purport to provide diverse benefits such as improved teaching, learning, and campus life. Measuring the accuracy of these claims is complicated by a lack of consensus, clarity, and a common understanding of basic mLearning goals and objectives, and tools for their effective assessment. This presentation will provide insight into how institutions are considering challenges presented in assessing mLearning and other mobile-based initiatives and will challenge attendees to contribute to the development of necessary assessment tools.

Learning Objectives:
*Understand how m-learning is unique and differs from e-learning and other teaching and learning with technology strategies and initiatives
*Recognize the wide variety of potential applications of mobile technology and m-learning throughout the university setting, from academic, to administrative, to social, and beyond
*Demonstrate how m-learning and mobile initiatives require a unique set of assessment tools designed to evaluate specific uses that are separate yet inherently tied to broader learning objectives
*Understand how to contribute to the development of a common set of m-learning assessment metrics and tools
