Using Motivational Tactics to Form Authentic Learning Environments

Thursday, May 20 | 12:00PM–12:20PM ET
Session Type: Industry and Campus Session
Delivery Format: Simulive Session

In the past decade, advancements in teaching and learning have increased, resulting in a change to both learning and pedagogy. As a result of the recent shift online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many institutions, faculty, and students were forced online rapidly and without the training necessary to create a successful online environment. The pandemic, coupled with political and racial tensions, has prompted the focus of education to incorporate authentic learning experiences, inclusive and multicultural practices, and humanistic learning strategies. As such, our proposal focuses on the use of motivational learning theory and tactics to create authentic, humanistic, and practical learning experiences for students. Our presentation will focus on identifying the needs of students, comparing these needs across student demographics, and soliciting feedback from students to help facilitate learning. Additionally, we will focus on motivational design, establishing relevance and satisfaction in your courses, creating authentic learning environments, and providing concrete examples of motivational tactics in action.
