Sheryl Burgstahler is an affiliate professor in the College of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her teaching and research interests include inclusive teaching and learning and the application of universal design to technology, learning activities, and student services. She founded directs the DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology) Center and the Access Technology Center. These two centers promote (1) the use of mainstream and assistive technology to support the success of students with disabilities and (2) the development of computers, software, websites, multimedia, and learning options that are welcoming and accessible to individuals with disabilities. Burgstahler's current projects include the Center for Universal Design in Education. She has published dozens of articles, delivered many presentations at national and international conferences, and is the lead editor of the book Universal Design in Higher Education: From Principles to Practice.

Summary

Malcolm Brown, EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative director, and Veronica Diaz, ELI associate director, will moderate this webinar with Sheryl Burgstahler. Most postsecondary faculty and administrators desire to make teaching and learning opportunities engaging for all students, but many do not feel fully prepared to ensure that their offerings are fully accessible to potential students with disabilities. This presentation will address typical disabilities of postsecondary students, challenges they encounter in accessing technology-based learning opportunities, assistive technology that provides access to technology, and universal design strategies that can be employed to make teaching and learning welcoming and accessible to all students, including those with disabilities. Practical suggestions will be offered and resources will be shared.
