Overview

Data literacy programs are emerging across higher education, but few institutions have established models to follow. As institutions increasingly recognize that data must be treated as a strategic asset and a foundation for AI readiness, this Learning Lab provides structured guidance for leaders navigating the landscape of data literacy programming. We will explore why institutions seek to establish data literacy programs and their importance, what's working at institutions with established programs, discuss common challenges and creative solutions, and examine critical design decisions: identifying institutional data personas and their learning needs, scoping program content (including AI literacy), and choosing delivery models. This hands-on format provides time to apply frameworks to your own institutional context while learning from real-world examples and expert insights, helping you move from planning to steps. You'll leave with a preliminary roadmap for building a data literacy program suited to your institution's culture, priorities, and long-term goals.

Learning Outcomes:

NOTE: You will be asked to complete assignments in between the Learning Lab segments that support the learning outcomes stated below. You will receive feedback and constructive critique from course facilitators.

  • Identify institutional priorities driving data literacy initiatives.
  • Define key campus data personas and learning needs.
  • Determine appropriate program scope, content, and literacy levels.
  • Evaluate scalable program models and delivery strategies.
  • Foster cross-campus collaboration to support data culture development.
  • Develop a roadmap for sustainable data literacy programming.
  • Identification of one or more uses cases for data storytelling at your institution and the ability to propose a data storytelling project
