The Learning Lab experience is supported by both asynchronous and synchronous components. Each part includes a set of resources, an asynchronous discussion, and an interactive live session, all of which culminate in the development of a project to apply learning to local and specific contexts in support of the learning objectives.
Schedule
Part 1: Introduction to AI Literacy in Education
January 14, 2026 | 3:00–4:30 p.m.ET
‘Introduction to AI Literacy in Education’ provides an overview of what AI literacy is, and why it is important for educators and students. It traces the development of AI literacy concepts, discusses why they are important for all educators and learners, and introduces the Scaffolded AI Literacy (SAIL) framework used to guide the content of this course. Through examples and scenarios, it explores a range of challenges and opportunities in becoming AI literate. It provides participants with a range of learning activities where they engage with AI as an educational technology and discuss practical applications of the SAIL framework in teaching and learning. This will provide a firm foundation for applying the framework during the remainder of the course.
On completion of Part 1 of this learning lab, you will be able to:
- Describe the key components of AI literacy and why they are important
- Discuss a range of challenges and opportunities that AI presents in education
- Explain how a given learning context may engage with multiple aspects of AI literacy
- Apply AI literacy concepts to a range of learning objectives and scenarios
Part 2: Developing the Concepts, Skills, and Citizenship of AI Literacy
January 21, 2026 | 3:00–4:30 p.m.ET
‘Developing the Concepts, Skills, and Citizenship of AI Literacy’ allows participants to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of how AI literacy can support meaningful uses of AI both in their professional practice and with their students in the classroom. Using the SAIL framework as a guide, participants will engage with a range of AI tools to develop an applied understanding of how AI literacy can be developed across a range of subject areas and learning levels by integrating a range of different AI technologies and related tasks into teaching and learning. It includes practical hands-on activities using various types of AI tools to demonstrate how AI literacy can be developed and applied in context as part of broader learning experiences.
On completion of Part 2 of this learning lab, you will be able to:
- Analyse how the contextual use of a given AI tool can relate to multiple aspects of AI literacy
- Use a range of AI tools in learning activities that contribute to the development of AI literacy
- Effectively apply the use of AI tools to your professional practice
- Design learning activities that take advantage of the affordances of AI technologies
Part 3: Assessment in an AI Literate Classroom
January 26, 2026 | 3:00–4:30 p.m.ET
‘Assessment in an AI Literate Classroom’ focuses on the related concerns of using AI tools for assessment and concepts of AI literacy. It investigates how AI tools can be used by educators in designing assessments and how learners can engage in authentic assessment while using AI tools within the constraints of educator guidance. It highlights the opportunities that AI tools present in terms of helping to create authentic assessments, and also how they can be used to assist students in formative assessment processes. Ethical issues related to the use of AI in the assessment context are also discussed, along with practical strategies to address them.
On completion of part three of this learning lab, you will be able to:
- Apply AI tools to the design of assessments
- Guide, encourage, and support your students in the appropriate integration of AI tools into your assessments and related learning activities
- Create authentic assessment tasks that take advantage of AI tools while also ensuring that appropriate learning is taking place
- Explain the ethical challenges that can arise from the use of AI in the assessment process, and how to mitigate them
Part 4: Guidance and Policies – Supporting Learners to Use AI in Authentic Ways
January 29, 2026 | 3:00–4:30 p.m.ET
‘AI Guidance and Policies - Supporting Learners to Use AI in Authentic Ways’ focuses on the challenges that educators face in providing guidance and policies for students in the appropriate and effective use of AI in their learning. It takes as its primary focus that creating or applying guidance or policies is not enough to ensure that students are transparent and productive in their use of AI. Equally important is ensuring that learners have the appropriate AI literacies to be able to understand and respect the reasons for guidance and policy. We’ll consider how to create useful guidance for students in using AI for learning and assessment to ensure that AI supports rather than disrupts learning.
On completion of part 4 of this learning lab, participants will be able to
- Explain the relationship between AI literacy and the ability to follow guidance and policies about the use of AI tools in learning and assessment
- Develop contextual guidance for students grounded in specific aspects of AI literacy
- Support students to follow given policies and guidance through the development of appropriate AI literacies
Lab Project/Assignments
The assignment for this course is to apply your learning by developing a lesson plan appropriate to your professional practice that incorporates the use of artificial intelligence in the creation of that lesson plan, aspects of its content, learner activities, and assessment. In addition to the lesson plan, we’ll ask you to include a self-reflection on how you’ve used AI to complete the assignment.
