Ransomware, Redemption, and How Ye Lowly IT Staff Dredged Out Davy Jones's Locker

Thursday, April 12 | 1:00PM–2:00PM ET | Baltimore Ballroom A, Fifth Floor
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Interactive Presentation
I will give a personal account of a ransomware attack that happened on our campus and what our IT team did to overcome it. Learn how a small community college in Kansas survived one of the worst ransomware attacks reported by the KCCIT (Kansas Community Colleges Information Technology) group. Ahoy, I'll warrant ye that ransomware attack started from a .zip file that was being opened by not just one employee, but seven, in one day.

Outcomes: Understand payload delivery in ransomware * Better understand ISACA's definition of GRC * Learn how low-budget IT staff without an information security department can improve your incident response and reduce risk
