Accessibility Strategies for Using Extended Reality in Teaching

Wednesday, October 18, 2023 | 10:10AM–10:50AM ET
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Live Session
Extended reality (XR) technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are being examined in higher education as potential tools for enhancing teaching and learning across disciplines. AR places virtual objects in the learner’s real-world environment. VR immerses the learner in a virtual world. Mixed reality (MR) combines AR and VR elements. As we integrate AR and VR into face-to-face and online classrooms, it is important to consider accessibility for all students. In this presentation, we will discuss various strategies for making learning more inclusive when using immersive technologies. We will explore how accessibility considerations can be thoughtfully integrated into XR learning experiences across disciplines and will consider how XR technologies can be used to create inclusive, equitable, and supportive learning experiences. Additionally, we will highlight resources available for those who wish to learn more about how XR technologies are being used to enhance teaching and learning across the disciplines and how one might connect with established communities of practice.
