Breakout Innovation: Implemented Instructional Technology for Understanding Braille
Have you ever struggled with finding an interpreter for your class and finding a way to increase engagement with hard-of-hearing students? This Lightning Talk focuses on further education (IDEA: Regulations) and to “lead productive and independent adult lives, to the maximum extent possible.” (IDEA: Title 1). The session will continue to provide important information about the implementation of improving communication in the classroom by understanding braille translation in real-time. In addition, the presentation will provide innovative technology and instruction strategies for helping students, faculty, and staff correspond with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
The session will focus on the following information: compensatory skills that permit access to the general curriculum (such as braille and concept development, tactile graphics, and additional specialized communication skills among all users); orientation and mobility skills; social interaction skills; assistive technology (AT), including optical devices; self-determination theory; and sensory efficiency (including visual, tactual, and auditory skills).
