Effective Online Teaching in a Post-Pandemic Context: An Early Intervention Approach

Wednesday, October 18, 2023 | 12:10PM–12:30PM ET
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Simulive Presentation
This session will explore the thought process, design, facilitation, and products of Teaching to Engage (TTE), a three-week asynchronous course that immerses participants in the online student’s shoes as they navigate their way through an online course. Offered to graduate students at NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) with aspirations to develop their technical and pedagogical know-how in the online space, this faculty development offering was crafted to address the distinct need that many newer online instructors were first introduced to online learning via Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) as a direct result of the pandemic. For many instructors, such an introduction established a faulty foundation of what quality, intentionally designed online learning experiences looked like. TTE aims to address and repair these foundations through a rich, active learning experience. TTE educates participants on the distinctions between ERT and online instruction while introducing them to myriad educational technologies, including Kaltura, Poll Everywhere, VoiceThread, and more. The course culminates in a course project that probes students to think critically about technology and pedagogy as they design their own learning exercises. In doing so, TTE aims to contribute to the ever-growing pool of instructors who appreciate the distinction between ERT and online learning and are able to more effectively take advantage of the benefits the online modality offers.
