From Adapting to Thriving: Empowering Neurodiverse Learners
Despite comprising up to 30% of the student population, neurodiverse students are often excluded from discussions on diversity and inclusion in education. These students face significant barriers to learning in traditional courses, which become even more challenging in online learning environments. Therefore, it is crucial to incorporate neurodiversity into our conversations and practices regarding diversity and inclusion in education, with a particular focus on online courses. This interactive session will explore designing and teaching online courses that cater to neurodiverse learners by using two key frameworks: C.A.R.E (Community, Agency, Representation, and Equitable Access) and UDL (Universal Design for Learning). Through this exploration, you will gain insights and strategies that promote inclusive course design and teaching, benefiting not only neurodiverse learners but all learners. The session will focus on effective techniques that decrease barriers to learning through student engagement, community-building, representation, and equal access to course materials, leading to a more diverse and inclusive learning experience for all.
