Visualizing Technology Debt: An IT System Framework and Scorecard Approach for Strategic Planning

Thursday, October 19, 2023 | 12:10PM–12:30PM ET
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Simulive Presentation
During this session, we will share a tool we’ve developed to assess the technology debt of IT systems. Building on a framework that EDUCAUSE first shared in 2015, we will discuss how to measure technology debt with objective data to visualize a system’s overall “health” by providing a simple and repeatable framework to snapshot the system’s current life cycle status, the relative burden to the teams maintaining it, and the risk the system introduces to the institution. This view of systems is essential for comparing priorities and building informed plans to address institutional technology debt. The tool’s output also provides decision makers with a handy visual representation that displays why IT projects and/or capital investments are necessary for sunsetting or refreshing IT systems.
