Blurring Lines Between Real and Virtual: Innovative Uses of AR/VR for Student Engagement

Wednesday, November 13, 2024 | 12:00PM–12:20PM ET
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Facilitated Playback/Simulive Session
In an era where student anxiety is heightened and technological proficiency is widespread, harnessing emerging technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) can foster meaningful connections and enhance skills development. At the University of St. Thomas, three recent projects have leveraged immersive platforms to blur the boundaries between physical and digital spaces, creating engaging, personalized learning experiences that reinforce core values and concepts. This session will showcase three innovative AR/VR initiatives that have enabled students to deepen their sense of place, build professional competencies, and connect with diverse narratives within their community. They are: 1) Recaffeinated, a virtual coffee shop simulation that cultivates business acumen through role-playing and interactive scenario; 2) Body swaps, an embodied VR experience for practicing interpersonal skills, complete with personalized feedback from AI-powered avatars; and 3) Culture of Encounter, where an AR application brings static images to life, revealing the stories and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff. Participants will have the opportunity to explore these projects firsthand and gain insights into the technical implementations, pedagogical underpinnings, and impact on student learning outcomes. The presenters will also discuss strategies for integrating AR/VR into educational contexts and address challenges related to accessibility, scalability, and stakeholder buy-in.
