Demystifying Green IT Practices: A Collaborative Approach to Sustainability

Wednesday, October 23, 2024 | 4:00PM–4:45PM CT | EDUCAUSE Commons, Posters Plus
Session Type: Poster Session
Delivery Format: Poster Session
The role of higher education institutions in promoting sustainability involves research activities, curricular changes, improving campus infrastructure, and encouraging green practices. The issue is so important that there are now several ranking systems related to green and sustainable universities. We will present the achievements and challenges of a cross-agency team that has been collaborating to promote sustainability initiatives on their campuses. The team will share its success stories, best practices, and lessons learned and engage attendees in an interactive exercise to assess their own readiness for green office certification based on the framework from the University Sustainable Campus. The audience will get access to curated online resources that can be used by educational organizations to draft their sustainable IT standards, implement policies, and initiate specific actions related to campus sustainability. Higher education, being a transformational agent, has a tremendous impact not only on educating students in their subject matter but also on forming their sustainable habits, which would significantly contribute to the future of society. We aim to inspire and inform other higher education institutions interested in pursuing similar sustainability goals and fostering a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility among their students, faculty, staff, and community members.
