Surveys are invaluable tools for understanding the student experience, but too often in survey analysis we risk overlooking important insights hidden within the data. Moreover, traditional analytical tools present barriers to nonexpert users, most commonly students who could otherwise contribute unique perspectives to analysis. Dashboards address these issues by enabling seamless exploration of frequencies, benchmarks, and crosstab analyses, but many existing solutions are platform-locked and may not be fully customizable to your needs. To better gauge the breadth of student experience and elevate student contributions to analysis at the University of Maryland (UMD), UMD’s Academic Technology Experience (ATEX) team within the Division of IT (DIT) developed its own in-house survey analysis dashboard using R Shiny. In this session, participants will take part in a live, interactive dashboard demonstration, choosing which data to visualize from UMD’s EDUCAUSE survey results. We will discuss the advantages and the potential pitfalls of using dashboards to look at survey data, and we will leave you with practical advice for building your own custom survey analysis dashboards.
