This session offers an update from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Technology (OET) on key initiatives under President Biden’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence (October 2023). The Executive Order tasks the Department with developing resources, policies, and guidance to ensure the responsible, safe, and equitable use of AI in education, with a particular focus on its impact on vulnerable and underserved communities.
Attendees will be introduced to recent OET deliverables, including Designing for Education with Artificial Intelligence: An Essential Guide for Developers and Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning: Insights and Recommendations.
The session will also cover insights gathered from roundtable discussions with educators, researchers, and administrators from a broad range of institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and community colleges. Discussion will include outcomes from the Department’s AI in postsecondary education working session convened in June 2024. These outcomes informed the Department’s ongoing work to ensure that AI technologies serve all students equitably and responsibly.
