From Crisis to Innovation: Open Strategies for Sustainable Online Learning
The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed an unprecedented shift in education, compelling institutions to swiftly adapt to remote learning environments. Learning Management Systems (LMS) became indispensable, serving as the backbone for delivering curriculum, facilitating engagement, and assessing student progress. As we emerge from the pandemic, it's essential to reflect on lessons learned and chart a course for the future of LMS. This panel, including experts in academia, edtech, and instructional design, draws on real-world experiences from three universities that combined technical and professional resources to develop a shared multi-tenant LMS infrastructure leveraging the open-source Sakai LMS, other open-source tools, and a commitment to open standards. These universities successfully delivered online education throughout the pandemic and today manage an increase in online courses, more diverse content, and a broader user base than pre-pandemic. Panelists will discuss adaptation and innovation: how institutions adapted LMS strategies during the pandemic, and what approaches emerged; pedagogy and engagement best practices for designing engaging online learning experiences, and how instructors can use technology to foster student engagement; how LMS user and course statistics can inform instructional design, student support, and decision-making; and what emerging and future trends and technologies will shape the future of LMS and how institutions can prepare for these changes.
