Leveling the Playing Field: The Role of Generative AI in Promoting Equitable Education

The integration of generative AI (GAI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, has emerged as a pivotal force in reshaping communication education. At Pacific, introducing ChatGPT into the Communication Research Methods course has initiated a significant transformation in student engagement and empowerment. This application of GAI has not only bolstered students' confidence and competence but also deepened their involvement in learning processes. Students have demonstrated marked improvements in developing research questions, designing methodologies, and executing comprehensive data analyses. My presentation will explore strategic approaches to incorporating GAI into communication curricula, emphasizing the creation of equitable and inclusive educational experiences. I will detail how GAI tools facilitate critical thinking and creativity through enhanced brainstorming, intricate research designs, and detailed content analyses. This pedagogical innovation is particularly beneficial for a diverse student population, including first-generation and international students, ensuring equitable access to the latest educational technologies. Attendees of this session will gain valuable insights into effective strategies that democratize education through technology.
