(Re)Designing Assessments in the Age of Generative AI (separate registration is required)

Monday, October 21, 2024 | 12:30PM–4:00PM CT | Meeting Room 225A, Second Level
Session Type: Preconference Workshop
Delivery Format: Additional Fee Program
This session will examine the impact of generative AI on university assessment practices and provide a comprehensive framework for designing effective and ethical assessments in the digital age. Participants will be guided through the evolution of assessment, highlighting the shift from traditional formative and summative approaches to focusing on assessment for learning. The session will explore the variety of ways students can demonstrate their learning, including through diverse artifacts, interactions, and feedback mechanisms. Generative AI introduces serious challenges to assessment. To address these challenges a framework will be discussed that balances sound pedagogy, the well-being of both students and instructors, academic integrity, and security considerations. Practical examples will be provided to illustrate the application of this framework to the design of multiple types of assessments. Participants will design their own assessments within this framework, examine case study examples and gather take-home ideas for their own institutions. Throughout the session, participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences and perspectives, fostering a collaborative exploration of this topic. The goal will be to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to thoughtfully integrate generative AI into university assessment practices, while upholding the principles of effective and ethical assessment.
