Join us for a realistic conversation about shifting the obligation of ITC product vendors to demonstrate their product’s accessibility compliance back to them and away from institutions of higher education. At the time of acquisition, we will examine processes to re-focus vendors to fulfill their obligation to demonstrate/validate the accessibility conformance of their products and, in doing so, avoid allocating university resources to that effort. We will also explore tactics to proactively involve vendors of products with identified accessibility barriers in creating and supporting their use via a temporary alternative access plan. In addition, we’ll examine the roles of the departments purchasing or adopting IT, Procurement, and the IT vendor. We will discuss how this relates to the critical elements of an Accessibility Maturity Model and suggest contract language to help protect your institution. Further discussion will include the effect of the Federal Register publication of the Department of Justice’s (Department) final rule update to regulations for Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its impact on public universities and its expected effects on private universities concerning these processes.
