You Dream It, We Print It: 3D Printing for the Greater Good. Hearts, Robots, Shark’s Teeth, and More

Wednesday, October 23, 2024 | 10:15AM–11:00AM CT | Meeting Room 008AB, River Level
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel Session
In this interactive session, participants will learn about NYU’s LaGuardia Studios (LGS), a full-service facility featuring advanced Additive Manufacturing (AM), 3D digitization and immersive resources that is utilized by a full-range of university constituents, to advance teaching, research, and clinical practice. LGS has worked with faculty, students, alumni, doctors, and the community to scan and print a variety of 3D models that have advanced surgery practices, faculty research, and student learning. LGS has assisted with a face transplant, hearts for surgeons to practice before surgery, shark’s teeth for displays at the American Museum of Natural History, and even crowns for the Met Gala. The panel will share the mission of the LaGuardia studios that includes the belief that all disciplines should have access to 3D scanning and printing with a variety of materials. Participants will then have an opportunity to get hands-on exposure to the 3D printed objects. The panel will provide the operational strategy, including the technologies and team skills needed to address a variety of potential challenges, understanding the staff consultation experience, and how we get input from community stakeholders on future technologies. Finally, there will be a short technical strategy as it applies to teaching, learning, research, and clinical practice at NYU.
