Practical AI: Managing Innovation, Usage and Risks: Perspectives from Harvard, UChicago & WashU

Thursday, May 02, 2024 | 10:45AM–11:30AM CT | Regency, Second Floor
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel Session
Thought leaders from three research universities will discuss and compare the approaches their institutions are taking to enabling the use of AI while managing security, privacy, and other surprising risks. AI is here, but what does that mean for Higher Education? From pure and applied research, to business process improvement, to student assignments and learning enhancement, AI is transforming Higher Education in many ways. Most applications of AI will be transparently and pervasively embedded in applications, providing functionality akin to a spelling and grammar checker that also finishes your sentences. Many institutions seek to leverage AI to dramatically improve teaching effectiveness, research, clinical care, and administrative operations. And researchers will continuously strive for new breakthroughs in using AI and improving AI. How can we manage the risks while enabling this transformative new technology? Join us as we review AI use cases, data privacy, internal and external considerations, and more. The panelists will discuss the risk management frameworks and processes their institutions are building to protect themselves from disclosures of confidential information, poisoning of training data, corruption of systems, and much more. The overall pros and cons of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, Google’s Secure AI Framework (SAIF), and Microsoft’s AI Security Risk Assessment will be discussed.
