Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act Safeguards in Higher Education: A Jedi's Path to Compliance

Wednesday, May 21, 2025 | 8:00AM–8:45AM ET | Harborside Ballroom C, 4th Floor
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel
Members of the Higher Education Security and Privacy Academy are invited to participate in an interactive presentation of NC State's Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) journey. This session is perfect for everyone from the Jedi just getting started to the Jedi Master with an established program. We'll explore practical strategies for program scoping, identifying the pieces to get started, and performing risk assessments. Each institution must learn the best approach in harnessing the Force (e.g., resources, leadership, communication, tools, approaches) and designing a GLBA program that not only meets compliance, but also provides value. With tightening budgets, maximizing the impact and ROI of GLBA efforts through resource analysis and integration with existing compliance programs is crucial; we'll discuss practical strategies for achieving this. It is increasingly important that security and compliance teams be able to advocate for GLBA compliance and explain to leadership the unique challenges it brings to higher education. Come join the community to spark resistance against "no" (i.e., overcome objections and find creative solutions) and help one another explore ways to use the Force and work together to successfully protect our universities and support their mission success.
