“Privacy doesn’t matter.” That is a phrase that we hear quite a bit. Join us for a discussion about two different sides behind the idea of “privacy doesn’t matter.” First, we will refute the notion that students don’t care about privacy and will dig into what might be causing this widespread comment. Do they really not care, or is it because it is so overwhelming to manage and control your own data these days? Maybe it's because students don’t care about privacy the way we think they should, so therefore they don’t care about privacy. Each generation has more mental debt than the ones that came before. Young people these days carry a lot of mental debt just because of the times they live in: computers, IoT, connectivity, social media, data brokers, data sharing, and data as a commodity. We’ll also talk about what happens when privacy really doesn’t matter?when it’s baked in and intrinsic to how the university does things. Building a privacy function leads to prioritization of Privacy by Design and Privacy by Default. This develops into a culture of privacy and creates a space where privacy becomes such a part of things that not to implement it is no longer considered. It is unimportant because it becomes so basic and essential.
