Privacy is now more important than ever. Students, faculty, staff, and families are aware of their privacy rights?and the implications when it goes wrong. Mishandling data, breaches, or violations of privacy law can have real and immediate impacts on institutional reputations. A representative from the U.S. Department of Education Privacy Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) will discuss the ins and outs of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), how it protects student privacy, and how it applies to institutions’ data and practices. Using best practices and cautionary examples from the field, PTAC will highlight why effective institutional privacy programs must extend beyond cybersecurity, underscoring the fact that student privacy is more than compliance: it lies at the very heart of it all.
