Learning Experience

This Learning Lab experience is asynchronous and guided, self-paced and should be completed by May 30. Each of the parts below includes a robust set of resources in support of the learning objects and the development of a project to apply learning to local and specific contexts.

Schedule

Part 1: A Primer for High-Quality Equitable Digital Learning

Part 1 begins with an orientation to the learning lab via a short video tour of the Canvas site and an opportunity to network and connect with your fellow participants. You then will

  • Learn how to differentiate between digital learning, high-quality digital learning, and high-quality, equitable digital learning by identifying the core practices that create valuable digital learning experiences for your students.
  • Discuss the three levels of digital learning (digital learning, high-quality digital learning, and high-quality, equitable digital learning) and identify which level you are currently using in your courses.

Part 2: Evidence-Based Teaching Practices for Equitable, High-Quality Digital Courses

In Part 2, you will learn about evidence-based teaching practices in digital learning and the role they play in developing an equitable high-quality digital experience for your students. According to Every Learner Everywhere - “Equitable teaching practices are classroom methods that proactively identify and confront the barriers to academic progress that disproportionately affect minoritized, poverty-affected, and first-generation students.” Part 2 will

  • Show you how to create a sense of belonging in your classes by introducing you to equitable teaching practices in digital learning, and
  • Examine resources and guidelines to help you apply practices consistently.

Part 3: Case Studies of Successful Course Implementation of Digital Learning

In Part 3, you will be provided several case studies from which to choose to learn how other instructors have improved student learning at their institutions using high-quality, equitable digital learning tools and research-based policies and processes to modify their courses. These case studies come from various disciplines at universities, colleges, and community colleges throughout the country and share the experiences, lessons learned, and suggestions in hopes that you can find one that relates to your teaching experiences.

You are encouraged to select one of the provided case studies that you think might provide guidance for potential changes in your classes.

Part 4: Digital Toolkit Development

In Part 4, you will develop a toolkit that offers guidance to ensure that the courses you teach are high-quality, equitable courses that promote success, personalization of learning, and engagement. You will use the information that you gathered throughout the learning lab to complete the toolkit.

Lab Project/Assignments

Using a provided template, participants will create a “Toolkit for Digital Learning” they can use to ensure their courses offer a high-quality and equitable digital learning experience. This Toolkit will be created by weaving together information curated from each of the activities of the four parts of the lab and will be guided by the lab’s learning objectives. Each part of the lab requires responses to prompts in a discussion forum, and you will receive feedback and comments from your instructors as well as other participants to refine your ideas and to build your toolkit.

While this is a guided, self-paced learning lab, you are encouraged to follow the suggested deadlines so your implementation project provides valuable guidelines for creating high-quality, equitable digital learning experiences for your students.
