Got a Signal? Enterprise Wi-Fi in the Residence Halls
At Rivier University, we upgraded our residence hall Wi-Fi network to improve speed and reliability. In the masonry buildings, we used existing ports for every pillow cabling plant to install low-powered APs in every room. Topics we will cover include IP scope, dynamic IP servers, channel planning, cable tracing and documentation, VLAN planning, geographical boundaries, bandwidth estimation, power output, Shannon's law, controllers, site- management software, Wi-Fi packet sniffers, and heat maps (how to generate them with Ekahau).
Outcomes: Identify the considerations that must be taken into account before the project begins * Understand the complexity of the IP scope of adding hundreds of access points * Explore how to manage a channel plan and provide strong coverage
