Live Long and Prosper: Reshaping Spaces and Services for the Future

Tuesday, March 26, 2024 | 2:00PM–2:45PM ET | Room 552 AB
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation or Panel Session
Burke Library opened in 1972, with no purposeful renovation since. In recent years, we have recognized a change in student library use. The need for spaces to teach and learn new technologies has also increased. Accordingly, we looked to make the library better to meet research and technology needs. The summer 2023 redesign was six years in the making. First-floor service points as well as teaching, technology, and event spaces were re-envisioned and we sought to highlight collections. When working on a project with so many details and components, things get overlooked. Things will run behind schedule and not be right when you occupy the space. While there is work still to be done, we have started to reap the benefits that the new spaces provide. We will discuss how we planned the redesign, organized a summerlong building closure, and successfully moved into a new and exciting space designed with student research and technology use in mind.
