Media for Accessibility and Accessibility in Media

Wednesday, March 27, 2024 | 8:30AM–9:15AM ET | Room 552 AB
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation or Panel Session
During this session, we intend to present the state of media accessibility and universal design at Brown University in the following areas: assistance to students with hearing impairments who participate in person to classroom and graduation activities; use of tools such as Zoom to facilitate live captioning, virtual ASL, and simultaneous translation; the campus-wide initiative for closed-captioning of public-facing videos; and the widening use of lecture capture for review and study of course content. We will demonstrate the use of closed-captioning, audio description, and other tools for on-demand videos integral to the teaching and learning experience and review the costs associated with making content accessible. We will discuss our most recent efforts in conjunction with Student Accessibility Services and the Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity to make our students feel included in the teaching and learning community, with both digital media support and portable technology. And we will take a look at the undergoing research to make our installed classroom technology more responsive to concepts of universal design. We will include a brief review of the adoption of AI for accessibility to media content and for providing auto-captions and translations; a discussion on AI as a viable tool to facilitate accessibility will follow the presentation. Please bring your mobile device to follow along and interact with the presentation.
