Education 2030, a recent report published by UNESCO, proposes a unifying definition of “microcredential,” calls universities to serve as institutions for lifelong learning, and identifies microcredentials as a potential means through which many of today’s current industry pressures and trends might be addressed. This presentation discusses microcredentialing in detail, provides examples of universities using microcredentials, and proposes ways in which universities might incorporate microcredentialing into their programs moving forward. Issues such as declining enrollment, the rapid pace of technology change, faculty burnout, industry partnerships, and potential challenges using microcredentials will also be addressed in relationship to the topic.
