Kirkland Zine Fest 2024: National Grants for Local Impact

Hamilton College Library & Information Technology Services (LITS) received a grant from the National Humanities Center to participate in its inaugural Being Human Festival. This public humanities zine fest was an opportunity to bring together K-12 students and teachers, families, college students and faculty, and the greater local public community to learn side by side about zines and how to make them. The four-day event took place in LITS Makerspace and the local Kirkland Town Library with workshops and podcasts, plus a concurrent exhibit on zines from the library’s Special Collections. The aim behind the workshops and podcast was to offer different and popular approaches to creating zines and learning about how pictures and words can be combined to tell a story of one’s heritage, identity, and/or humanity. Experts and practitioners introduced the public community to either digital, hand-drawn and collage, or collectively a hybrid of the trifecta (digital, collage, and drawn) as popular mediums for zine artists today. As the co-PIs for the grant, this poster will showcase the innovative use of technology with library programming, the collaboration with the local Kirkland Town Library, and how to find funding opportunities that align with your goals for programming and events.
