In the dynamic landscape of higher education, students and educators face learning environments both fragmented and enhanced by generative AI. This session addresses the “disconnections” posed by this divide and proposes ways to reconnect students to powerful learning experiences through the creative use of technologies. Presenters will share practical pedagogical frameworks that prioritize student success and career readiness over AI buzzwords. Speaker One will highlight common concerns among faculty and students regarding AI’s value, ethics, and curriculum-wide implementation, calling out the “AI Elephants” in the classroom. She will outline flexible approaches to foster learning environments where students become critical, creative, and confident users of emerging technologies. Speaker Two will showcase these principles in action by reflecting on Boston University’s innovative general education program. She will unpack how the program’s Digital/Multimedia Expression Hub Unit reimagines traditional academic work in dynamic, multimodal formats. Through her AI-intensive research writing course taught with this focus, she will demonstrate how digital storytelling and AI integrations help students develop essential skills to communicate research effectively and acquire technological fluency. Attendees will learn how this work helps students anticipate the demands of a digitally connected world where writing and creativity intersect with emerging technologies.
