The Socratic Questioning Method in the Age of Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education

Tuesday, April 01, 2025 | 2:00PM–2:45PM ET | Room 554 AB
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation/Panel Session
In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), higher education (HE) faces both opportunities and challenges to foster critical thinking (CT) among students. This study investigates how AI-powered tools, when integrated thoughtfully into HE settings, can enhance CT through the Socratic questioning method. The Socratic method, known for promoting deep inquiry through strategic questioning, is a proven approach to stimulate critical reflection. As AI advances, understanding how it can complement, rather than impede, critical inquiry becomes crucial. Using a mixed-methods design, this research draws from pre-engagement interviews, AI-based learning interactions, and post-engagement discussions to assess AI's role in supporting CT. This session will provide actionable insights for creating educational spaces where students critically engage with AI, thus fostering responsible and reflective use of technology.
