Building a Plane Mid-Air? Strategies for Faculty Engagement with AI

Wednesday, March 27 | 1:00PM–1:45PM ET | Room 552 AB
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Presentation or Panel Session
The session will bring together faculty and faculty support experts to present case studies and discuss different strategies for facilitating faculty engagement with AI in their teaching, using teaching examples and experiences from AI faculty development initiatives at Rhode Island School of Design. These form the basis for discussing faculty training and support for AI literacy that centers pedagogy, accommodates different literacy levels, and engages with ethical issues?while providing space for exploring creative and experimental uses of AI in teaching. More specifically, the panel session will address and initiate discussion regarding strategies and resources for AI faculty engagement designed and developed with different levels of AI skills and literacy in mind; offer space/time for extended hands-on experience and critical reflections on issues of labor, intellectual property, and student privacy; straddle more than one disciplinary domain or field of practice (e.g., writing and design); and take advantage of Generative AI multimodal affordances. The panel will consider the pace of Generative AI development and new AI literacy infrastructures and resources emerging across different institutions and learning modalities. They aim to capture successes, failures, and lessons learned in the current moment, provide a forum for sharing best practices, and facilitate future collaborations and roadmaps.
