Muster Your Students Aboard!: Building and Operating a Student-Staffed SOC

Wednesday, April 11 | 4:00PM–5:00PM ET | Baltimore Ballroom A, Fifth Floor
Session Type: Breakout Session
Delivery Format: Interactive Presentation
As the admiralty continues to limit our crew numbers, the officers of the deck must look for affordable and practical ways to keep things ship shape. You may have an untapped resource on shore—students! This talk will focus on how Syracuse University built a SOC staffed entirely with students. We'll discuss how we sold the concept to leadership and the issues we had to overcome. We'll talk about how we find, interview, hire, and train both infosec and non-infosec students. Finally, we'll dive into some of tools and processes they use to maintain the watch.

Outcomes: Investigate a strategy to obtain funding for a student-run SOC * Learn how to develop a pipeline on your campus for identifying, hiring, training, and managing students * Learn how to leverage students for common day-to-day security operational duties such as IDS analysis, vulnerability management, and incident response
