Webinar | Beyond the AI Tool: Connecting Technical Expertise with Disciplinary Practice

As higher education moves beyond the initial surge of AI uncertainty, attention is shifting toward concrete, sustainable implementation. Institutions are discovering that broad, one-size-fits-all approaches fall short, particularly when they ignore disciplinary context, diverse pedagogical practices, and the realities of classroom-level decision- making. At the same time, uneven AI adoption can widen equity gaps for students and create inconsistent expectations for faculty support.

This webinar focuses on moving from strategy to execution. We introduce a practical taxonomy that distinguishes between AI-embedded courses, where AI is integral to learning outcomes, and AI- supported courses, where AI functions as a learning support. Participants will explore key design considerations for developing an institutional integration framework, including alignment to curriculum, assessment, academic integrity, accessibility, and adaptability. The webinar also highlights strategies for connecting institutional edtech and IT decision-makers with disciplinary experts and instructors, creating critical “bridge roles” and collaborative structures required for successful, scalable AI implementation.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Distinguish between AI-embedded and AI-supported course designs using a practical taxonomy approach.
  • Identify limitations of blanket AI policies and ad hoc adoption, including risks to equity and support.
  • Explore key elements of an institutional AI integration framework.
  • Describe how a "bridge role" collaboration model pairs subject matter expertise with AI/IT expertise.
