A Collaboration with Quality Matters and Encoura Eduventures Research
As institutions place greater strategic and financial importance on online learning, leaders are reconsidering how they approach growth, differentiation, capacity, and AI implementation in a more mature and competitive landscape. Drawing on six focus groups with 30 online learning leaders conducted for the 2026 CHLOE Conversations Report Series, we will explore how they are making more selective decisions about growth, using quality and the student experience to differentiate programs and responding to mounting pressure to demonstrate value. We will also examine the expanding role of generative AI, including how leaders are collaborating across campus to shape institutional strategy and seeking stronger evidence to assess AI’s impact. The session will surface shared themes and key differences across community colleges and public and private four-year institutions, offering insight into the strategic choices institutions are facing now.
