In an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping every sector, higher education institutions must lead with both vision and strategy. This presentation will share the journey of building the Applied AI Institute at Utah Valley University (UVU)—from its inception to its role today as a cross-disciplinary hub for AI innovation, research, and education. We will explore the foundational decisions that shaped the Institute’s mission and structure, including institutional alignment, strategic planning, and governance. Attendees will gain insights into how the Institute was embedded meaningfully within the university's ecosystem, balancing academic priorities, industry partnerships, and community impact. Special attention will be given to fostering cross-campus collaboration, engaging faculty across disciplines, and developing AI policy frameworks that support ethical innovation and inclusive access. The presentation will also highlight practical strategies for promoting AI literacy across campus, building momentum, and maintaining alignment with rapidly evolving technologies and societal needs.
