Cocreating AI Strategies in Higher Education: An AI and Design Thinking Experience (separate registration is required)

Monday, October 27, 2025 | 8:00AM–4:00PM CT | Meeting Room 105, Level 1
Session Type: Preconference Workshop
Delivery Format: Additional Fee Program

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping how colleges and universities operate, teach, and support students. However, many institutions are stuck in the "wait-and-watch" phase, unsure of how to move from awareness to action. This immersive, full-day workshop bridges that gap. Participants will engage in a structured design thinking process tailored to one of four real-world AI challenge areas: AI for Institutional Operations; AI in the Curriculum; Bridging the Faculty-Student AI Literacy Gap; and AI for Student Success. Working in groups based on institutional mission and size, participants will use AI as a co-designer to create empathy maps, test ideas, and cocreate stakeholder-aligned strategy prototypes. The workshop will demonstrate how to integrate generative AI responsibly and creatively into strategic planning processes. By the end of the day, participants will leave with a practical, personalized AI Strategy Toolkit, a 30-day action plan, and a peer network of colleagues facing similar challenges. This isn’t a "talking heads" session; it's a cocreation studio that combines inspiration, collaboration, and tangible outputs.

Outcomes of this workshop:

  • Apply design thinking to develop a mission-aligned AI strategy.
  • Select and frame a real-world institutional AI challenge using empathy maps and stakeholder personas.
  • Use generative AI tools to simulate stakeholder perspectives and rapidly prototype strategy solutions.
  • Leave with a customizable AI Strategy Toolkit, including templates, planning guides, and facilitation aids. Join a peer network to support implementation and continued collaboration

Note: Participants who successfully complete this preconference workshop will be eligible to receive an EDUCAUSE microcredential. To earn this digital badge, you must complete a brief workshop evaluation and share two key learning outcomes from your experience. All registered participants will receive an email on October 29 with instructions for completing these steps. Completion of both is required. To learn how to accept and make the most of your microcredential, visit the EDUCAUSE Microcredential website.
