Ctrl+Alt+Del: Rebooting IT to Attain Digital Agility
This presentation details the journey of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) from a reactive, on-premise environment to a proactive, cloud-first architecture. In 2020, NYIT faced significant challenges tied to an outdated IT infrastructure resulting from years of underinvestment and reactive planning. Understaffing and ad hoc cybersecurity practices left many home-grown and aging systems as technical debt and posed significant institutional risk. Despite the efforts of dedicated IT staff, the infrastructure couldn't support strategic goals to improve the student experience, enable research, improve operational efficiency, and reduce overall institutional risk. A comprehensive IT infrastructure assessment identified critical gaps across five domains: governance, cybersecurity, systems management, identity and access management (IAM), and cloud strategy. This work resulted in a multiyear roadmap focused on IT modernization through commercial solutions, cloud adoption, and formalized security practices. We’ll share strategies for gaining executive support, securing stakeholder buy-in, and tracking progress. Our experience demonstrates how higher education institutions of any size can successfully modernize and achieve transformational success.
