From Isolated Competencies to Constellating Skills: Operationalizing the Dimensions of AI Literacies

Most strategy for AI literacy development still focuses on isolated techniques—prompt engineering, plagiarism checks, or tool demos—leaving educators, learners, and administrators with a patchwork understanding of responsible AI use. Empirical research funded by UNESCO, followed by a series of EDUCAUSE Learning Labs, revealed a fuller picture: eight interconnected Dimensions of AI Literacies that combine four skill sets (Cultural, Creative, Constructive, Communicative) with four mindsets (Confident, Cognitive, Critical, Civic). Together they provide a practical taxonomy for policy, curriculum, and professional development. In this session we summarize the findings, demonstrate how institutions have embedded the dimensions into course redesigns, faculty onboarding, and administrative dashboards, and share openly licensed resources—including a mini-course accessible to educators from across the globe.
