Grassroots to Global: Growing a Generative Artificial Intelligence Peer Learning Network
In January 2023, after the rise of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools, a multidisciplinary group of faculty and administrators at our institution launched a Generative AI Peer Learning Network. Facilitated by the Division of Academic Innovation and supported by key stakeholders—including Student Success, the Library, University Technology Solutions, and the Office of Institutional Research—this grassroots group began meeting monthly to share best practices, co-develop AI-enhanced assignments, and explore the pedagogical and ethical implications of emerging technologies. What began as an informal network quickly became a hub of innovation rooted in reciprocity and trust, and a shared passion for teaching and learning. Despite no formal incentives, faculty across disciplines continue to contribute generously and inspire institutional change. The impact of this network includes new collaborations within our institution and across institutions, such as discussions among teaching and research faculty, and global communities of practice with international partners. Additionally, insights from this group are informing institutional guidelines on the ethical and effective use of generative AI. This session will explore how grassroots collaboration can drive digital fluency and the holistic integration of technologies such as AI/ML into higher educational spaces by intertwining initiatives in faculty development, microcredentials, open educational resources, and open pedagogy.
