In 2021, both The University of Alabama and West Virginia University built multiyear roadmaps for which a new cloud-based ERP was the centerpiece, but only a part of the plan. For The University of Alabama, the plan focused on its enterprise cloud strategy, assessing its technological and functional readiness to implement new cloud-based enterprise systems. An intentional focus was placed on UA’s data infrastructure and governance processes to both simplify its cloud implementation and to ensure their investment led to the data environment they prioritized. For WVU, the period ahead of implementing the ERP was focused on fortifying operational and technical foundations. It also included a parallel focus on the student experience via CRM capabilities and research infrastructure via a new enterprise research administration platform. While these two universities developed a plan with some different activities ahead of their ERP replacement, their plans reflected intention and consideration of university priorities. They highlight the replacement of the ERP as a compelling event that might inspire a more holistic consideration of investment in critical digital capital and the enablers to make those investments successful.
