Scaling Learning Without Scaling Work: High-Quality Assessments through Question Generators

Implementing high-impact teaching practices such as mastery learning, frequent low-stakes assessments, and second-chance exams can significantly improve student learning and retention. However, these approaches are difficult to scale in large courses due to the increased demand on instructor time for grading and question development. This session explores how computer-based assessments can be designed to support these best practices without compromising pedagogical quality or overwhelming instructors. We focus on the use of auto-graded, randomized question generators that enable students to receive immediate feedback, engage in repeated retrieval practice, and complete personalized practice and testing experiences. Participants will learn how these tools allow for the creation of high-quality assessments that go beyond traditional formats, reduce instructor grading loads, and enable content reuse and sharing across semesters and institutions. Attendees will leave with examples of effective assessment designs, access to open educational resources, and connections to a growing community focused on scalable, research-based assessment practices.
