How might universities develop interdisciplinary communities of practice that can break down the silos of academia and reach across departments and disciplines to encourage innovation and support best practices among university faculty and staff working with new information technologies? This session will present case studies from two universities that illustrate how institutions of higher education can successfully encourage the development of interdisciplinary communities centered around innovative technologies. The studies focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and extended reality (XR) and their ability to improve communication and collaboration among faculty and staff, as well as coordinate innovative activities and grant funding opportunities across campus. The studies provide a framework to help universities manage technological innovations that have the potential to disrupt higher education writ large.
