Teach Everyone to Fish: How to Develop and Lead Data Literacy Training at Your Institution (separate registration is required)

Monday, October 27, 2025 | 8:00AM–11:30AM CT | Meeting Room 207 B, Level 2
Session Type: Preconference Workshop
Delivery Format: Additional Fee Program

In the new technological era, we have more tools than ever at our disposal to evaluate and analyze student data. So why does it seem that our data literacy and self-service analytics are not matching the pace? EDUCAUSE reports that 97 percent of colleges have dedicated data staff, but only one in four college officials polled said that their data ecosystem operates ideally for analytics-driven decision-making. Institutions that prioritize growing their in-house network of data stewards through robust professional development training programs are setting themselves up for success to improve overall campus data literacy. In this session, we will explore methodology from Data-Empowered Learning, Teaching, and Advising, a developed data literacy and assessment training for individuals in higher education. The workshop will give you ready-to-use tools and help prepare you to implement your own data literacy and assessment training at your home institution.

Outcomes of this workshop:

  • Review reasonable frameworks for a healthy data analysis ecosystem, given participants' current institutional resources.
  • Practice exercises used in data literacy and assessment training that participants may then teach colleagues at their home institutions.
  • Complete a data stewardship map that details participants' identified goals and possible strategies to increase data literacy and informed change management at their institutions.

Note: Participants who successfully complete this preconference workshop will be eligible to receive an EDUCAUSE microcredential. To earn this digital badge, you must complete a brief workshop evaluation and share two key learning outcomes from your experience. All registered participants will receive an email on October 29 with instructions for completing these steps. Completion of both is required. To learn how to accept and make the most of your microcredential, visit the EDUCAUSE Microcredential website.
