Tuesday, October 28, 2025 | 4:30PM–5:15PM CT | EDUCAUSE Commons, EDUCAUSE Central Poster Area
Session Type: Poster Session
Delivery Format: Poster
Transitioning into a career in IT without a formal background can be intimidating, particularly for women who often face the additional hurdle of entering a field traditionally perceived as male-dominated. This session seeks to empower and inspire by sharing the diverse stories of four women who have forged successful IT careers through nontraditional routes. By showcasing their journeys, we aim to challenge gender stereotypes, highlight the value of diverse perspectives, and provide actionable insights for others looking to follow similar paths—or those looking to support others looking to make the leap into careers in IT. The session will delve into the unique challenges and barriers these women encountered due to their nontraditional backgrounds and gender, exploring how they navigated stereotypes, unconscious bias, and imposter syndrome. It will also highlight the innovative strategies they employed to gain relevant skills and knowledge, build networks, and find mentors and sponsors.
