Each semester as students navigate their coursework across higher education, terabytes of data are created at each institution that provide clues that can help us support students during this important journey. For example, an institution of approximately 35,000 students generates over 22 terabytes of teaching and learning data each year as students navigate digital coursework, including over 900 million clickstream events, the majority of which take place in the Learning Management System (LMS). Working with this data is challenging, given the scale; the necessary integration of contextual data around students and courses; modeling events in meaningful and validated ways; and the ethical and privacy challenges inherent to working with student behavior data. This panel provides strategies necessary to overcome these challenges, helping to realize the notion of the data-empowered institution.
